The Devonshire "Domesday": III.

Berry Pomeroy and Stockleigh Pomeroy

Trans. Devon. Assoc. vol. 28, (1896), illus., pp. 362-390.

by

Oswald J. Reichel

Prepared by Michael Steer

Domesday Book is the earliest, and by far the most famous, English public record. It is the records the survey that William the Conqueror ordered to be taken at Christmas 1085. The 'Exeter Domesday' is a separate volume of records for Cornwall, Somerset and most of Devon. There is a lapse of about three generations before the next comprehensive series of public records begins. Reichel's paper is presented as "a contribution to the economic history of the cultivating classes in Domesday". Google with the Archive Organization has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. The Internet Archive makes available, in its Community Texts Collection (originally known as Open Source Books), books that have been digitised by Google from a number of libraries. These are books on which copyright has expired, and are available free for educational and research use. This rare book was produced from a copy held by the New York Public Library, and is available from the Internet Archive.
