Berry castle and its ancient lords.

Prepared by Michael Steer
Before archaeological excavations began in 1980, Berry Pomeroy was generally believed to be a fortress of Norman origin, containing a mansion largely built during the site's short ownership between 1547 and 1552 by Edward Seymour, known as 'Protector Somerset'. In fact, it is now clear that the castle was begun by the Pomeroy family at some time in the late 15th century, and encloses a great house built by Somerset's descendants between about 1560 and 1610. The paper also presents an interesting account of the reaction in Devon to the 1549 Act for Reforming the Church Service. Google with the Archive Organization has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. The Internet Archive makes available, in its Community Texts Collection (originally known as Open Source Books), books that have been digitised by Google from a number of libraries. These are books on which copyright has expired, and are available free for educational and research use. This rare book was produced from a copy held by the Princeton University Library, and is available from the Internet Archive.
A Pomeroy pedigree is presented on pp 438-9.
