The Literature of Devonshire up to the Year 1640: Being the Presidential Address to the Members of the Devonshire Association
Privately Printed (1893) 134pp.
by
T.N. Brushfield
Prepared by Michael Steer
This privately printed booklet records Dr Brushfield's presidential address at the Association's July 1893, Torquay meeting. The author's aim was to point out in what directions English literature generally, as well as locally has been aided by the labours of Devonshire men, and by Devonshire residents, as well as draw attention to some of the more notable works and institutions that stand out prominently above their fellows. For the reader's convenience the topic has been subdivided into historical periods. Google with the Archive Organization has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. The Internet Archive makes available, in its Community Texts Collection (originally known as Open Source Books), books that have been digitised by Google from a number of libraries. These are books on which copyright has expired, and are available free for educational and research use. This rare book was produced from a copy held by the University of Toronto Library, and is available from the Internet Archive.
Copy of a 1916 letter from James G Commin, Book Seller of Exeter,
to John Satterly of Toronto, Canada, with a list of books on Devonshire history,
is inserted between pp 20-21of the booklet.
Appendix B, pp. 129-134 presents a list of Devonshire authors to 1640
