Early Nonconformity in Bideford
Trans. Devon Assoc. vol. 34 (1902), pp. 410-417.

Prepared by Michael Steer
Bideford is a strategically sited ancient port and market town serving a wide rural hinterland. Professor Hoskins called it "the most attractive town in North Devon". In its prosperous heyday it was one of the busiest ports in the country, and for two centuries there was considerable trade with America. The early days of nonconformity in Bideford provide an interesting story of repression and social turmoil surrounding the lives of any who dissented from the teachings and practices of the established church. Google with the Archive Organization has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. The Internet Archive makes available, in its Community Texts Collection (originally known as Open Source Books), books that have been digitised by Google from a number of libraries. These are books on which copyright has expired, and are available free for educational and research use. This rare book was produced from a copy held by the New York Public Library, and is available from the Internet Archive.
