The author has identified and attempted to correct a number of slips made in an article by Mr. E. N. Worth entitled Notes on the History of Printing in Devon, and read to the Devonshire Association in July 1879, then printed in the Transactions. Mr Worth states "Printing was introduced into Torquay by an amateur. The Rev. Mr. Fayle, incumbent of Trinity Church, brought from Somerset a schoolmaster named Lane, and he was the first who practised the printing art there.. The earliest professional printers in Torquay were Messrs. Cockrem and Elliott, who established an office there about 1834”. The article, from a copy of a rare and much sought-after journal can be downloaded from the Internet Archive. Google has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. These books, on which copyright has expired, are available for free educational and research use, both as individual books and as full collections to aid researchers.
