Notes on Venn in the parish of Bishop's Teignton

Trans. Devon. Assoc. 42, (1910). illus. pp.512-516.

by

M.H. Jordan

Prepared by Michael Steer

Bishopsteignton appears to be named from a sanctuary or asylum built there by Bishop Grandisson of Exeter, that was invested with great privileges and immunities, and considered as inviolable. The bishop also erected a house with a chapel, the remains are still to be seen. The church is principally in the Norman style, with an enriched western doorway in excellent preservation; near it are the remains of an ancient chapel, and there was formerly a chapel at Venn, in the parish. The author describes and discusses the old ruined house at Venn. Google with the Archive Organization has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. The Internet Archive makes available, in its Community Texts Collection (originally known as Open Source Books), books that have been digitised by Google from a number of libraries. These are books on which copyright has expired, and are available free for educational and research use. This rare book was produced from a copy held by the New York Public Library, and is available from the Internet Archive.
