The Summer Palace for the Bishops of Exeter was built at Bishopsteignton during the 13th century, taking its water supply from White Well, on Haldon. Bishop Bronescombe is credited with building the palace and often resided there in the later years of his bishopric, 1258-80. Bishop Grandisson (1327-69) later rebuilt the palace. It was used as a refuge during the Black Plague. Bishop Veysey (1509-49) was the last bishop to reside there. It was disbanded in 1549. Edward VI granted the palace, with the adjacent Manors to Sir Andrew Dudley, later executed for his role in Lady Jane Grey's claim to the throne. Google with the Archive Organization has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. The Internet Archive makes available, in its Community Texts Collection (originally known as Open Source Books), books that have been digitised by Google from a number of libraries. These are books on which copyright has expired, and are available free for educational and research use. This rare book was produced from a copy held by the New York Public Library, and is available from the Internet Archive.
