Discoveries in the more recent deposits of the Bovey Basin
Trans. Devon. Assoc. 1883, Vol XV, pp.368-395.
by
W. Pengelly
Prepared by Michael Steer
The Bovey Basin, lying between Bovey Tracey and Newton Abbot, is the largest and highest quality source of ball clay in the UK, and probably the world, It has been worked since the 17th century. The paper’s author was a geologist and amateur archaeologist; one of the first to contribute proof that the Biblical chronology of the earth calculated by Archbishop James Ussher was incorrect. In 1862 Pengelly reviewed the geology of the Tertiary lignite deposits of Bovey Tracey in an important paper read to the Royal Society, and the following year was elected FRS. His desire to educate led him to found the Torquay Young Men's Society (later the Torquay Mechanics' Institute), the Torquay Natural History Society, and (in 1862) the Devonshire Association. The present lengthy and erudite paper provides the genealogist with names of several local influential people as well as the academics and professionals associated with his Bovey Basin research. The article, from a copy of a rare and much sought-after journal can be downloaded from the Internet Archive. Google has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. These books, on which copyright has expired, are available for free educational and research use, both as individual books and as full collections to aid researchers.
