Bovey Tracey and District

M.A. Hole

Basil Blackwell: Oxford, 1930

Original index, provided by Michael Steer (with the permission of Brian Adams)

The book presents extracts from articles written by local historian William Ellis, which appeared in the Weekly Express between 1883 and 1887. They have been reproduced to preserve a record of some interesting old legends relating to Bovey Tracey, as well as "other matters of local interest". The author points out that "it must be clearly understood that the historical accuracy of the statements in (the book) in general cannot be substantiated".

Originally farming Stickwick, the Hole family, of which the author was a member, moved to Parke in Bovey Tracey where they set themselves up as country squires. There are several memorials to the Hole family in the parish church including a handsome memorial window in the Lady Chapel. Parke house and estate were left to the National Trust in 1973 by Major Hole.
