Hele Family Pedigree

By Elize Hele

In Frederick Thomas Colby (Ed). The Visitation of the County of Devon in the Year 1620. (1872).
London: Harleian Society, p.147.

Index prepared by Michael Steer

Elize Hele was a lawyer of the Inner Temple and Treasurer to James I. He owned a number of mills in Bovey Tracey, residing at Parke. He and his wife are both buried in Exeter Cathedral, and an elaborate memorial to them both, as well as to his first wife and son is on the South side of the Chancel of Bovey Parish Church. His son having predeceased him, Hele left his fortune to be spent in 'pious uses', from which he became known to posterity as 'Pious Uses Hele'. Among his many benefactions were the Blue Maids School (now Maynards School) and Hele School both at Exeter. His pedigree, together with his arms was registered in the 1620 St George and Lennard Visitation.
