Bovey Tracey in Bygone Days: A Portrait of a Dartmoor Town

Lance Tregoning

Devon Books (1989) [ISBN: 0861148444]

Index prepared by Michael Steer

The book presents a pictorial record of Bovey Tracey as it was in the latter part of the 19th and early 20th centuries. It begins with a pictorial "walk" through the old town, followed by sections on schooling, leisure, work, festivities and so on, covering many facets of everyday life in an ancient Devon town.

Local historian Lance Tregoning was born in 1917 at Summerfields, a guest house in East Street, Bovey Tracey. His parents had a grocer's shop in Fore Street. He served in the Devonshire Regiment during the Second World War and was Church Warden of the Parish Church for 28 years. He was much loved and respected by those who knew him, and the new approach steps to the South Porch of the Church were dedicated in 1992 to his memory.
