BUCKLAND-BREWER

[Description(s) from The National Gazetteer of Great Britain and Ireland (1868)]

"BUCKLAND-BREWER, a parish in the hundred of Shebbear, in the county of Devon, 4 miles to the S.W. of Bideford, its post town. It comprises the hamlets of Bilsford, Galsworthy, and Tythacott. The addition to the name of this parish was taken from the Brewer family, by whom the manor was anciently held. The grant of a market, long since disused, was obtained for the inhabitants by the Abbot of Dunkeswell. The living is a vicarage* in the diocese of Exeter, value with the perpetual curacies of Bulkworthy and East Putford annexed, £244, in the gift of the crown. The church, which has a fine Norman entrance, is dedicated to SS. Mary and Benedict. A small college was once connected with it. The parochial charities produce £4 a year. Annual fairs are held on Whit-Monday and the 2nd November."
