Prepared by Michael Steer

The Paper was presented at the Association’s August 1866 Tavistock meeting. The author provides the names of several early local tin miners and labourers, as well as information on an important early Devon industry. George Wareing Ormerod, M.A., F.G.S., was born at The Damhouse in Tyldesley, Lancaster, on October 12th, 1810. He published and contributed generously to the Association’s meetings and Transactions, residing at Chagford for many years and died, aged 82 at Teignmouth. His obituary may be accessed here. A complete transcription of his paper appears on the Devonshire Association website and a scanned image is available in the Internet Archive. The Paper from a copy of a rare and much sought-after journal can be downloaded from the Internet Archive. Google has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. These books, on which copyright has expired, are available for free educational and research use, both as individual books and as full collections to aid researchers.
