Table of Family Names in Cheriton Bishop

by

Sophia Lambert

Over the ages, various lists of people living in Cheriton Bishop were compiled for various purposes. A number of these lists survive. They include a list of those eligible to pay the "lay subsidy" or tax levied in 1525 and in 1544; those signing the "Protestation returns" in 1641 (these are all the adult males declaring themselves to be loyal to the protestant religion); those eligible to pay the poll tax in 1660; those signing an oath of allegiance to the monarch in 1723; and those listed in the 1821 census returns. The table below sets out for each of these lists all the surnames that were mentioned. It is a version of a table that was prepared for a paper on Mobility and Persistence of families in Cheriton Bishop that was published in the Transactions of the Devonshire Association, Volume 139 (2007).

The spelling of names evolved over the centuries and until the 19th century individual names were often spelt in a variety of ways. The table below groups together names that appear to be the same despite their varied spelling, but perforce some guesswork is involved and not all the groupings may be accurate.

The table is annotated with information about income and literacy that could give some indication as to the social status of the people involved.
