The paper was presented at the Association’s August 1900 Totnes meeting. The author who researched and constructed this invaluable ecclesiastical calendar, Reverend Sabine Baring-Gould of Lew Trenchard, was an Anglican priest, hagiographer, antiquarian, novelist, folk song collector and eclectic scholar.  He is remembered particularly as a writer of hymns, the best-known being "Onward, Christian Soldiers". In compiling a calendar of the saints to whom churches and chapels are dedicated in Devon and Cornwall, with particular attention to those that belonged to the ancient British Church (most of whom in Devon were displaced by the bishops of Exeter after the Saxon Conquest), several serious difficulties were encountered. No Celtic Calendars for the West of England have been preserved, and the Exeter Calendars at the time of writing ignored Devon and Cornwall’s Celtic saints. The paper has an extensive Appendix of Saint’s Days, as well as the days of town and villages’ feast and fairs.
