Clerical and Social Life in Devon in 1287

Trans. Devon. Assoc. vol. XXVI, (1894), pp. 209-229.

Prepared by Michael Steer

The paper was presented in August at the Association’s July 1894 South Molton Conference. The thirteenth century was a period of religious revival throughout Devon. Bishop Brownlow in this paper asserts that current knowledge of life in our county in the 13th century relies mainly upon contemporary records, depending particularly upon Bishop Bronescombe’s Register, 1257 to 1280, and Bishop Quivil’s Register 1280 to 1291, after which a few fragments collected by Association member Prebendary Randolph from various ancient documents compensate to a limited extent for the loss of diocesan registers during Bishop Bytton’s episcopate. Of Bishop Bronescombe, the Prebendary remarked: “It is evident that a great wave of zeal for the Houses of God had swept over the whole Diocese (of Exeter), for we find that between September, 1259, and the end of 1298, the Bishop was called upon to dedicate 88 re-built or enlarged Churches. Further he revised the Cathedral Statutes in 1268, then through visitations made significant reforms. The article, from a copy of a rare and much sought-after journal can be downloaded from the Internet Archive. Google has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. These books, on which copyright has expired, are available for free educational and research use, both as individual books and as full collections to aid researchers.
