The Non-Conformist's Memorial:
being an account of the lives, sufferings and printed works of the two thousand ministers ejected from the Church of England
by the Act of Uniformity, August 24, 1662
By Edmund Calamy, DD & Samuel Palmer
2nd Edition, In Three Volumes, London: J Cundee (1802)
Prepared by Michael Steer
Dr Edmund Calamy the Younger (1671-1732) was one of the leading Presbyterian divines of his generation and is best known for his account of the ejected ministers. This became a nonconformist classic and a major source for historians of the seventeenth century. In addition, he published many other works, including A Defence of Moderate Nonconformity, which reconceptualised Dissent for a new era. Educated in England and the Netherlands, where he came to know Charles Spencer, afterwards third earl of Sunderland, and Spencer's tutor, Charles Trinmell, later bishop of Winchester, he was keenly engaged with the thought of early Enlightenment writers like Locke. This rare and much sought-after book was produced digitally from a copy in the University of California at Berkeley Library collection and can be downloaded from Google Books. Google has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. These books, on which copyright has expired, are available for free educational and research use, both as individual books and as full collections to aid researchers.
