Third Report of the Committee on Church Plate - Deanery of South Molton

Report and Transactions of the Devonshire Association for the Advancement of Science, Literature and the Arts. Vol. 42, 2nd Series

Plymouth: W Brendan & Son (1910). Paper read at Cullompton July 27th, illus. pp. 91-111.

Prepared by Michael Steer

South Molton is situated on the River Mole. In the 2001 census its civil parish had a population of 4,093. The town was one of the boroughs reformed by the Municipal Reform Act 1835. It retained this status as a municipal borough until 1967, when it became a rural borough in the South Molton Rural District. It is a small, well-built market town trading mostly in sheep and cattle, on the southern side of Exmoor just off the North Devon link road. In 1910, the Rural Deanery of South Molton consisted of 24 parishes; 23 of which were ancient, and Chittlehamholt, modern.
