Report and Transactions of the Devonshire Association for the Advancement of Science, Literature and the Arts. Vol. 47, 3rd Series

Plymouth: W Brendan & Son (1915). Paper read at Barnstaple July 21st, illus. pp. 134-159.

Prepared by Michael Steer

During 1915, the author visited all the parishes in the Deaneries of Chulmleigh and Hartland, to examine and report on their church plate. The Deanery of Chulmleigh consists of 17 parishes, with several possessing only modern plate. The oldest pieces were found in the smallest parishes. The Rural Deanery of Hartland also consists of 17 parishes, 14 of them ancient, one, Lundy Island, ancient and revived and two modern. It contains three important centres; Bideford, Hartland and Northam, the remainder are mainly smaller rural districts.
