The Church Bells in the Towers of all the Parish Churches of Devonshire

Revd H. T. Ellacombe

In Exeter Diocesan Architectural and Archaeological Soc. Trans 2 ser, v. 1, (1867) pp. 221-410.

Prepared by Michael Steer

Rev. H.T. Ellacombe was born in 1790, and after starting a career as an engineer, later took Holy Orders. He was curate of Cricklade, then from 1817 to 1835 was curate-in-charge of Bitton: in the latter year he became vicar. He was preferred to the family living of Clyst St. George in 1850 which he held until his death in July 1885. Ellacombe became interested in the history of bells and ringing at a relatively early age, probably stimulated by the considerable struggle that he had with the ringers at Bitton. Certainly his interests in belfry reform and antiquarian matters concerning the belfry developed together.
