The Private Chapels of Devon: Ancient and Modern
Trans. Devon Assoc., vol. XXXVIII, (1906), illus., pp. 391-403.
by

Prepared by Michael Steer
The paper was presented at the Association’s July 1906 Lynton meeting. Unlike a church, a chapel is a place of worship that has no pastor or priest and no permanent congregation. The term refers essentially to the physical space. The erection and maintenance of the Private Chapel or Domestic Oratory was a very important factor in the religious life of Christian countries. As many as 7000 private Chapels in Castles, Manors, and Parsonages are said to have been in use in England. Some chapels in private premises, for example some school chapels, are consecrated. On the other hand, some Anglican places of worship have been dedicated but not consecrated, thus being set aside for sacred purposes without the legal protection of consecration. The article, from a copy of a rare and much sought-after journal can be downloaded from the Internet Archive. Google has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. These books, on which copyright has expired, are available for free educational and research use, both as individual books and as full collections to aid researchers.
