The Devonshire “Domesday”,
IV. The “Domesday” Churches of Devon.
Trans. Devon Assoc., vol. XXX, (1898), pp. 258-315.
by
O.J. Reichel
Prepared by Michael Steer
The paper was read at the Association’s July 1898 Honiton meeting. The Domesday Book records little about churches and ecclesiastical governance in Devon during an important early period in our history, Much of the information it provides having been obtained from other sources and by inference. A great deal of what has been written respecting the churches of our county in early times has been coloured either by the feudal conceptions of the 13th century, or by the narrow parochial ideas of the 15th, and, claims Rev. Reichel, facts have sometimes been distorted for controversial purposes. The paper’s author has, therefore, endeavoured to confine himself strictly to data that can be proved, or to necessary inferences from those data. His paper is a cornucopia of invaluable and complex information on people and places in Devon during the centuries immediately succeeding the Norman Conquest. The article, from a copy of a rare and much sought-after journal can be downloaded from the Internet Archive. Google has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. These books, on which copyright has expired, are available for free educational and research use, both as individual books and as full collections to aid researchers.
