The Cistercian Houses of Devon, IV Ford Abbey

Trans. Devon Assoc., vol 10 (1878), pp. 349-376.

by

J. Brooking Rowe

Prepared by Michael Steer

As well as Ford Abbey, Rowe's paper also focuses in Newenham Abbey near Axminster. Ford Abbey, until 1842 located in Devon, was originally a Cistercian monastery before it was closed by Henry VIII in 1539. The house remained unoccupied for nearly a century. The Gwynne family purchased it in the 17th century, turning it into a luxurious family seat. Newenham Abbey was also a Cistercian abbey in Devon, near Axminster. The land was granted by Reginald de Mohun for its founding in January 1247, its foundation charter was witnessed by Richard, Bishop of Exeter. Newenham was also closed during Henry's Dissolution. Its mother house was Beaulieu Abbey. Google with the Archive Organization has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. The Internet Archive makes available, in its Community Texts Collection (originally known as Open Source Books), books that have been digitised by Google from a number of libraries. These are books on which copyright has expired, and are available free for educational and research use. This rare book was produced from a copy held by the University of California Library, and is available from the Internet Archive.
