The obituary was read at the Association’s July 1904 Teignmouth meeting. Major de la Pole would have been able to trace his pedigree back to a Cheshire family that acquired an estate in Devonshire through judicious marriage in the fourteenth century. A podcast on the early history of the Pole family, entitled “From Rags to Riches”, is available here. The obituary, from a copy of a rare and much sought-after journal can be downloaded from the Internet Archive. Google has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. These books, on which copyright has expired, are available for free educational and research use, both as individual books and as full collections to aid researchers..

Sometime before his death Major de la Pole met with a serious accident, the effects of which no doubt hastened his death, which took place on the 17th February, 1904 He was buried with his ancestors at Colyton.
