COUNTISBURY

"COUNTISBURY, a parish in the hundred of Sherwill, in the county of Devon, 16 miles N.E. of Barnstaple, and 2 E. of Lynton, its post town. It is situated on the river Lyn, near the Foreland. The living is a perpetual curacy annexed to the perpetual curacy* of Lynton, in the diocese of Exeter, value together, £120, in the patronage of the Archdeacon of Barnstaple. The church, dedicated to St. John the Baptist, has recently been restored. Glenthorne, a handsome edifice, is the residence of the Rev. W. S. Halliday, who is lord of the manor. On Countisbury Hill, which is 1,200 feet high, is a Danish camp, said to be the most perfect in the kingdom."
