Was St. Boniface an Irishman?
Trans. Devon. Assoc. 1884, Vol XVI, pp. 581-589.

The Rev Canon Brownlow, M.A.
Prepared by Michael Steer
Boniface (aka Wynfrith) was the Apostle of Germany, his date of birth is unknown. He was martyred 5 June, 755 (754). His particular emblems are the oak, axe, book, fox, scourge, fountain, raven, sword. Records indicate that he was English, although Ireland or Scotland also claim him. His birthplace was probably Crediton (Kirton). He descended from a noble family.
His parents intended him for secular pursuits, but, inspired with higher ideals by missionary monks who visited his home, Wynfrith (also Winfrid) felt himself called to a religious life. After much difficulty he obtained his father's permission and went to the monastery of Adescancastre (Exeter), where, under the direction of Abbot Wolfhard, he was trained in piety and learning. The article, from a copy of a rare and much sought-after journal can be downloaded from the Internet Archive. Google has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. These books, on which copyright has expired, are available for free educational and research use, both as individual books and as full collections to aid researchers.
