St Willibald: A West-Country Pilgrim of the Eighth Century
Trans. Devon. Assoc. 1890, Vol XXII, pp. 212-228.
by
The Very Rev Canon Brownlow, M.A.
Prepared by Michael Steer
The paper was delivered at the Association’s July 1890 Barnstaple meeting. Its author asserts that the biography of St. Boniface of Crediton was written by his nephew Willibald, whose mother must have also been a native of Devon. The pilgrimage of St. Willibald might, therefore, he claims, legitimately form the subject of a paper suitable to the Association. Willibald (Latin: Willibaldus; c. 700 – c.787) was an 8th-century bishop of Eichstätt in Bavaria. Information about his life is largely drawn from the Hodoeporicon (itinerary) of Saint Willibald, a text written in the 8th century by Huneberc, an Anglo-Saxon nun from Heidenheim who knew Willibald and his brother personally. Willibald was well-travelled and the first known Englishman to visit the Holy Land. His shrine is at Eichstätt Cathedral in Germany, where his body and relics from his journeys are preserved. The article, from a copy of a rare and much sought-after journal can be downloaded from the Internet Archive. Google has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. These books, on which copyright has expired, are available for free educational and research use, both as individual books and as full collections to aid researchers.
