St. Boniface in England
Trans. Devon. Assoc. 1892, Vol XXIV, pp. 151-162.
by
The Very Rev Canon Brownlow, M.A.
Prepared by Michael Steer
This paper was presented at the Association’s July 1892, Plymouth Conference. According to the Exeter Legenda Sanctoinim, corrected by Bishop Grandisson in 1327, and still to be seen in the Cathedral Library, Wynfrith was born at Crediton in 680. According to the author, a spring of water in the grounds of Mr. Cleave at Crediton, and still called St. Wynfrith's Well, is the only record of Wynfrith or Boniface in his native place. It is likely that the selection of Crediton as the earliest seat of the Devonshire bishopric, when the division of the Wessex diocese of Sherborne took place, was made because Crediton was the birthplace of the Apostle of Germany. The article, from a copy of a rare and much sought-after journal can be downloaded from the Internet Archive. Google has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. These books, on which copyright has expired, are available for free educational and research use, both as individual books and as full collections to aid researchers.
