The Early History of Crediton
Trans. Devon. Assoc. vol. 14, (1882), pp. 191-198.
by
Rev Prebendary Smith
Prepared by Michael Steer
The first indication of settlement at Crediton is that Winfrith (Saint Boniface) was born there in c. 672. In 909 a see was established with Edwulf (Œdulphus ) as the first bishop. Nine more bishops ruled until 1050, when Leofric transferred the seat to Exeter. Crediton returned two members to parliament during the reign of Edward I, in 1306-1307. The borough and manor were granted by Elizabeth I to William Killigrew in 1595, but there is no indication of town organization then or in 1630. The wool trade was established by 1249 and continued until 1630. Google with the Archive Organization has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. The Internet Archive makes available, in its Community Texts Collection (originally known as Open Source Books), books that have been digitised by Google from a number of libraries. These are books on which copyright has expired, and are available free for educational and research use. This rare book was produced from a copy held by the University of Michigan Library, and is available from the Internet Archive.
