The Church of St Andrew, Cullompton

Trans. Devon. Assoc. 42, (1910). illus. pp.182-205.

Rev. Edwin S. Chalk, MA

Prepared by Michael Steer

The present church building dates from 1430 and is built in entirely in the Perpendicular style. The tower and Lane's Aisle were later additions; however, a church has stood on the site since Saxon times. Subsequent to the Norman Conquest it belonged to Battle Abbey in Sussex, then to the Priory of St Nicholas at Exeter who were the Patrons until the Dissolution of the Monasteries in 1536. The church was once dedicated to St Mary as patron saint. The change of name to St Andrew took place in the fifteenth century. Google with the Archive Organization has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. The Internet Archive makes available, in its Community Texts Collection (originally known as Open Source Books), books that have been digitised by Google from a number of libraries. These are books on which copyright has expired, and are available free for educational and research use. This rare book was produced from a copy held by the New York Public Library, and is available from the Internet Archive.
