Two Tudor merchants of the Staple of Tiverton and Cullompton

Prepared by Michael Steer

In the past both Cullompton and Tiverton economies had a large component of wool and cloth manufacture. Both ancient towns owe their early growth and prosperity to the wool trade which caused the towns to grow rapidly in the 16th and 17th Centuries. Many wealthy wool merchants added to the towns' heritage: for example, John Lane in Cullompton and John Greenway in Tiverton. Google with the Archive Organization has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. The Internet Archive makes available, in its Community Texts Collection (originally known as Open Source Books), books that have been digitised by Google from a number of libraries. These are books on which copyright has expired, and are available free for educational and research use. This rare book was produced from a copy held by the New York Public Library, and is available from the Internet Archive.
