Index prepared by Michael Steer

The British Archaeological Association was founded in 1843 to promote the study of archaeology, art and architecture and the preservation of Britain's national antiquities. It encourages original research and publishes new work on art and antiquities of Roman to post-medieval date, although the art, architecture and archaeology of the Middle Ages form the core of its interests. George Ormerod (20 October 1785 - 9 October 1873) was an antiquary and historian. He matriculated from Brasenose College, Oxford in 1803, graduated BA in 1806 and received the honorary degree of MA in 1807. In 1806, when he came of age, he inherited extensive estates in Tyldesley and south Lancashire. He is mainly remembered for his History of Cheshire. This rare and much sought-after book was produced digitally from a copy in the New York Public Library collection and can be downloaded from Google Books. Google has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. These books, on which copyright has expired are available for free educational and research use, both as individual books and as full collections to aid researchers.
