The Granting of Administration document

Attached to the will is a further document, the administration granted to the captain’s widow Sarah on 7th May 1810. It is written in roundhand on a pro-forma supplied by Philip Hedgeland, a printer situated at the time on Exeter High Street.

The document bears two seals, one for the Bishop of Exeter, and one confirming the payment of the fee of ‘X’ (10) Shillings (equivalent to £36 in 2016). A small black-inked stamp shows that duty (possibly a paper tax) of Two Shillings was also paid.

The text in italics in the following transcript is the hand-written part.
