Will of George Dottin, Merchant of Dartmouth

In the Name of God Amen I George Dottin of Dartmouth in the County of Devon Merchant being in perfect health and memory and considering the uncertainty of our abode in this transitory life Revokeing all former Wills Doe make this my last Will and Testament in manner and form following And ffirst I bequeath my Soul into the hands of my Redeemer who hath bought it with his most precious blood and my body to have Christian buryall Item I give to the Overseers of the poor and Churchwardens of the parish of Thetford in the County of Devon the sume of ffifty pounds to be paid them by my Executrix hereafter named within three Moneths after they have ..... soe much Land or otherwise settled soe much that there may be a Yearly Rent of ffifty shillings payd p Ann for ever which sume its my Will shall be distributed at every Christ tyde by the Overseers of the poor of the said Parish to such decayed seamen or seamen's widows of the said Parish as want Releife Provided alwaies that the issue in part that such have (if any)from the parish be not lessened them by the Overseers of the poor but if there be noe such poor Seamen or Seamen's Widdows liveing in that Parish as receive Alms Then it is my Will that such money shall be applyed towards keeping soe many poor Boyes of the said parish at School to learne Arithmetic as the sume above given will yearly pay And it is my desire they be continued in School till they are fitt to be placed out Apprentices to Masters of Shipps or Merchants And its further my Will that books be kept of the Distribution yearly of this my gift and the names of the Boys kept at Schoole and to when they were bound out Apprentices and on what Termes Item I give to the poor of the Towne of Dartmouth the sume of ten pounds to be distributed in two yeares to poor Seamen and Widdows at the discretion of my Executrix hereafter named Item I give to the poor of the Towne of Kingsware the sume of ffive Pounds to be Distributed at the discretion of my Executrix hereafter named Item I give to my Sister Ruth Gregory (?) the sume of ffive pound sterling money Item I give to my brother John Dottin and his wife Elizabeth to each of them the sume of ffive pounds Item I give unto my Sister in Law Eliz. Matthews the sume of ffive pounds Item I give unto my Sister in Law Rebecca Jago the sume of ten pounds Item I give unto Cozen Margarett Marcke the Sume of fforty shillings Item I give unto my Nephew Walter Prideaux the sume of fforty pounds Item I give unto my Nephew Henry Dottin son of my brother John Dottin the sume of fforty pounds Item all the rest of my goods and chattels Land and Plate not here before mentioned I give unto my loveing Wife Sarah Dottin who I make my sole Executrix of this my last Will and Testament As Witness my hand and seale this tenth day of January One thousand seven Hundred and one 1701 George Dottin signed sealed and acknowledged in the presence of us Thos Newcommen John Osborne Nicholas Marck
