Dawlish: W.M. Cornelius (1875), illus., map, advts., x, 143 pp.
Prepared by Michael Steer
Entrepreneur and author, William Marcus Cornelius is listed in White's History, Gazeteer and Directory of Devon (1878), as printer, proprietor of the Dawlish Times, stationer, newsagent, proprietor of the circulating library, and shoe dealer. This tourist's 'vade mecum' is typical of its period. Dawlish was once the haunt of Charles Dickens and Jane Austen. Charles Dickens used the town as the birthplace of Nicholas Nickleby. The town particularly around the seafront, has much in common with the other resort towns in South Devon, a classic of Regency and early Victorian style. Dawlish's transformation from a fishing settlement to a watering hole for Victorian celebrities can be discovered at the Dawlish Museum. This rare and much sought-after book was produced digitally from a copy in the Bodleian Library collection and can be downloaded from Google Books. Google has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. These books, on which copyright has expired, are available for free educational and research use, both as individual books and as full collections to aid researchers.
