The Debtor’s Guide

The Gentleman, Merchant, Tradesman, Lawyer and Debtor's Pocket Guide., Bath (1785)

by

W. Gye

Prepared by Michael Steer

This small, quaint, highly readable handbook, a gem of inestimable value to the historian and genealogist, contains, pp. 144-148, a section on: The Devonshire High Gaol at Exeter for Felons, Sheriff's Ward, Exeter, the County Prison for Debtors, The County Bridewell at St Thomas's in Exeter, Tiverton Town Gaol, Tivertown Bridewell, and Plymouth Town Gaol. Its author is self-promoted as “an eminent Advocate in Law”.
As a rare book the Handbook is available from the Internet Archive. Google with the Archive Organization has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. The Internet Archive makes available, in its Community Texts Collection (originally known as Open Source Books), books that have been digitised by Google from a number of libraries. These are books on which copyright has expired and are available free for educational and research use.
