Section 2, pp. 160-311
Prepared by Michael Steer
The author was an Anglican priest, hagiographer, antiquarian, novelist and eclectic scholar. His bibliography consists of more than 1240 publications, though this list continues to grow. His 'Devon' is essentially a guidebook and one in Methuen's popular Little Guides series, many of which were reprinted in the 1920's. The coming of the railways provided a great stimulus to guidebook publication. Bicycles, and later, motor cars as well as a general increase in leisure time, with the beginning of paid holidays from work all contributed to their popularity. In general, guidebooks seem to have been rather neglected by scholars, although not by collectors. They are in fact popular literature of a didactic kind, with much to tell us of the tastes and values of the past and present. The particular copy that provides the source for this name index is indeed well-thumbed with user notes scribbled in pen or pencil on several of its pages. This rare and much sought-after guidebook was produced digitally by Google from a copy in the Pennsylvania State University Library collection and can be downloaded from HathiTrust. Google has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. These books, on which copyright has expired, are available for free educational and research use, both as individual books and as full collections to aid researchers.
