A Walk from London to Land's End and Back,
with notes by the way
by
Elihu Burritt
London: Sampson Low & Marston (1865) ix, 464 pp.
Prepared by Michael Steer
The author, an American (1810-1879) was known as "the learned blacksmith". Initially trained in that demanding trade, his extraordinary abilities led him to master Latin, Greek, French, Spanish, Italian and German, and by the age of 39 Burritt could read nearly fifty languages. His extraordinary aptitude gradually made him famous. His countrymen, at universities such as Yale and elsewhere, delighted to honour him; and he was appointed U.S. consul at Birmingham (UK) from 1865 to 1870. In 1863 he made two lengthy walking tours in Great Britain and recorded these in such publications as this one and A Walk from John O'Groats to Land's End (1864). This rare and much sought-after book was produced digitally from a copy in the Bodleian Library collection and can be downloaded from Google Books. Google has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. These books, on which copyright has expired, are available for free educational and research use, both as individual books and as full collections to aid researchers.
