My Devonshire Book: The Land of Junket and Cream
Plymouth: Western Morning News Co, Ltd. (1907) 31 plates, 174 pp.
by
J. Henry Harris
Prepared by Michael Steer
Tourism was a product of the Victorian era, hugely developed through Edwardian times and generating thousands of fascinating books and photographs that together define the development of the massive industry we know today. The introduction of statutory holidays, the increasing wealth of the Victorian and Edwardian middle classes, and the expanding railway and steamship networks all helped develop the emerging tourist industry. My Devonshire Book was produced for prospective holiday-makers in Glorious Devon. It is essentially (in the words of its author) a "holiday ramble", a potpourri aimed at light entertainment; a book to pack for a much anticipated vacation in the West of England's Nirvana, and an opportunity to view with supercilious eyes, the idiocy of Edwardian country life through rose coloured spectacles. The author, whose photograph and autograph grace the book's preface, also produced 'Cornish Saints and Sinners', 'The Fishers' and 'Our Cove' all in the same vein. This rare and much sought-after book was produced digitally by Google from a copy in the University of California Library collection and can be downloaded from HathiTrust. Google has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. These books, on which copyright has expired, are available for free educational and research use, both as individual books and as full collections to aid researchers.
