Arthur H. Norway
Prepared by Michael Steer
Arthur Hamilton Norway (1859-1938) was a civil servant and writer. (He was the father of novelist Nevil Shute, who was born Nevil Shute Norway.) Norway was a prolific and eclectic author who wrote on everything from the obscure History of the Post-Office Packet Service, between the years 1793-1815 to such popular, light-hearted travel books as Highways and Byways in Devon and Cornwall; with a similar guide book for Yorkshire, to a study of the literary Dante; the Divine Comedy, its Essential Significance; and Naples Past and Present. Illustrations in this travel guide were by Joseph Pennell and Hugh Thomson. This rare and much sought-after book was produced digitally by Google from a copy in the New York Public Library collection and can be downloaded from HathiTrust. Google has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. These books, on which copyright has expired, are available for free educational and research use, both as individual books and as full collections to aid researchers.
