South Devon: (including W. Dorset coast from Weymouth) and South Cornwall,
with a full description of Dartmoor and the Scilly Isles
London: Thomas Nelson & Sons (1902), illus, maps, plans, xxix, 229 pp.
by
C.S. Ward, and M.J.B. Baddeley
Prepared by Michael Steer
In the 19th and 20th centuries, Devon experienced great changes, including the rise of the tourist industry on the so-called English Riviera, a decline of farming and fishing, urbanisation, and also proliferation of holiday homes in, for example Salcombe. One of the interesting developments of the periods was the guide book, or 'vade mecum', of which this is a typical example. Dulau & Co. began to publish from 1882 their two companion Thorough Guides to North Devon and North Cornwall and South Devon and South Cornwall and were succeeded by Thomas Nelson & Son (these days one of the largest Christian book publishers). The guides included sectional maps by Bartholomew. Like many of their competitors, these guides had a key or index map printed on the inside front cover to help tourists as well as several 'pink pages', directory-like travel information for easy reference. They were very popular and ran to many editions through the last years of the century. Both Devon volumes were written and/or edited by Baddeley and Ward (and included layer-coloured maps from 1895). This rare and much sought-after book was produced digitally by Google from a copy in the Harvard University Library collection and can be downloaded from HathiTrust. Google has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. These books, on which copyright has expired, are available for free educational and research use, both as individual books and as full collections to aid researchers.
