A Guide to the Manors of Devon

Compiled by Ian Mortimer, PhD FRHistS

This resource links all the manorial units of Devon with the parishes in which they were situated, from Domesday Book (1086) to the abolition of copyhold tenure in 1922.

The intention is to provide a resource for local and family historians who have difficulty determining where a manor was, or which manors relate to which parishes. It does not relate directly to manor houses, except where the names of such buildings have led people to believe a manor of the same name existed, e.g. Bradley Manor, which was not a manor but the house relating to the manor of Highweek.

Names have been made to conform with the English Place Name Society volumes for Devon (Cambridge, 1931-32) where possible. The hundreds mentioned are the 'modern' hundreds given in the these volumes. Further information
