IZACKE, RICHARD. AN ALPHABETICAL REGISTER OF DIVERS PERSONS, WHO BY THEIR LAST WILLS & GRANTS HAVE GIVEN
TOWARDS THE RELIEF OF THE POOR OF THE COUNTY OF DEVON
AND CITY AND COUNTY OF EXON...

Richard Izacke, London (1736) 177pp.

Transcribed by Brian Randell

The Source (IZAC) and DWP's editing process

Izacke's book provides what are in effect partial, though in many cases quite lengthy, abstracts of over one hundred wills or indentures, concentrating on their charitable provisions. In most cases just the date that a will (or indenture) was written is given, and it is this date that is shown in our index in the Year column. If in addition the date that a will was proved is given, the year is recorded in the 'Note' column. The testator's town or parish, if not given explicitly, is (where possible) inferred, e.g. from a statement such as "twice mayor of this city (i.e. Exeter)", or from details of property involved in a bequest. In this latter case and for similar entries the uncertainty of the place identification is indicated by the use of square brackets and a question mark. The Number given in the 'Reference' column is that assigned by Izacke. (A number of items listed by Izacke merely detail charitable bequests, without giving any indication that they relate to a will or an indenture - for the sake of completeness these are included here.)
