DUNKESWELL, a parish in the hundred of HEMYOCK,county of DEVON, 5½ miles (N. by W.) from Honiton,containing 441 inhabitants. The living is a donative,endowed with £400 private benefaction, and £400 royalbounty, and in the patronage of Miss Graves. Thechurch is dedicated to St. Nicholas. Dunkeswell, whichanciently belonged to a Jew named Amadio, was purchasedby William Briwere, who founded, in 1201, anabbey for White monks, to the honour of the VirginMary; the annual revenue of which, at the dissolution,was estimated at £298. 11.10.
