The Arms of Fulford

Devon & Cornwall Notes & Queries 9:2, (1916) pp. 62-63.

by

Francis Fulford

Prepared by Michael Steer

The author draws attention to a surprising number of errors relating to the Fulford pedigree that appear in revisions of Westcote's Devonshire. As an example; in Dunsford Church there is an elaborate and impressive monument which has effigies of Sir Thomas Fulford and his wife Ursula. Smaller effigies of their seven children line up behind the couple. There is, according to the Note's author, no evidence that this Thomas was a knight. Further, a Sir William Fulford, described by Prince in his Devonshire Worthies, is entirely mythical. There is also commentary on the Fulford family's traditional use of supporters with their arms. Google with the Archive Organization has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. The Internet Archive makes available, in its Community Texts Collection (originally known as Open Source Books), books that have been digitised by Google from a number of libraries. These are books on which copyright has expired, and are available free for educational and research use. The copy of this rare book is held in the Library of Arthur William Bryant Messenger, and is available from the Internet Archive.
