This is the second part of the seventh paper in a series on the life and career of Sir Walter Raleigh, written and delivered at the Association's 1906 Lynton meeting by Thomas Nadauld Brushfield, MD, FSA. (1828-1910). The series was later aggregated and published as a book. In 1617, having been pardoned by the King, Raleigh was granted permission to conduct a second expedition to Venezuela in search of El Dorado. During the expedition, a detachment of his men under the command of Lawrence Kemys attacked Santo Tomé de Guayana on the Orinoco River in violation of peace treaties with Spain and against Raleigh's orders. A condition of his earlier pardon was avoidance of any hostility against Spanish colonies or shipping. In the initial attack on the settlement his son, Walter, was killed. Kemys, filled with remorse committed suicide. On Raleigh's return to England, an outraged Spanish ambassador demanded that Raleigh's death sentence be reinstated by the King. Raleigh was brought to London from Plymouth and beheaded at the Palace of Westminster on 29 October 1618. The article, from a copy of a rare and much sought-after journal can be downloaded from the Internet Archive. Google has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. These books, on which copyright has expired, are available for free educational and research use, both as individual books and as full collections to aid researchers.
