"EGG BUCKLAND, a large village, 3 miles N. by E. of Plymouth, has in its parish 1297 souls, and 3197 acres of land, including part of the village of Knacker's Knowle, many scattered houses, and the extra-parochial place called Laira Green, near the river Plym and Dartmoor Railway. . . . C. Tolcher, Esq., is lord of the manor of Egg- Buckland; and E. Clarke, Esq., is lord of the manor of Efford; but the greater part of the parish belongs to the Earl of Morley, the Countess Rothes, the Misses Morehead, Colonel Elliott, G.W. Soltan, Esq., Mrs. Revell, the Trustees of the late Sir J. St. Aubyn, R.A.A. Julian, Esq., T. Briggs, Esq., and several smaller owners, some of whom have pleasant seats here. . . . The Church is an ancient structure, with a tower and five bells, and contains several monuments to the Hals, Collins, and other families. . . . The vicarage, valued in K.B. at £8. 4s. 4d., and in 1831 at £474, is in the patronage of the Lord Chancellor, and incumbency of the Rev. George Hunt, M.A., who has a good residence and glebe. . . .."
