Reliquiae Bodleianae:
or Some genuine remains of Sir Thomas Bodley, Containing His Life,
the First Draught of the Statutes of the Publick Library at Oxford (in English)
and a Collection of Letters to Dr James etc.
by
Sir Thomas Bodley
London: Thomas Hearne for John Hartley in Holborn (1703) 384 pp.
Prepared by Michael Steer
Thomas Bodley was born at Exeter in the second to last year of Henry VIII. His father, John Bodley, was a Protestant merchant who went to live abroad rather than stay in England under the Catholic regime of Mary. On the accession of Elizabeth, the family returned to England, and Bodley entered Magdalen College, Oxford. He was later appointed gentleman-usher to Queen Elizabeth and entered Parliament as member for Portsmouth in 1584, representing St Germans in 1586. Bodley's greatest achievement was the re-founding of the public library at Oxford. He wrote this book, his autobiography up to 1609, which, with the first draft of the statutes drawn up for the library, and his letters to the librarian, Thomas James, was published by Thomas Hearne, There is an extensive unpaginated preface with references to many major classical authors. This rare book was produced from a digital copy held by the Bodleian Library that can be downloaded from Google Books. Google has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. Those on which copyright has expired are available for free educational and research use, both as individual books and as full collections to aid researchers.
