London: British Association for the Advancement of Science (1869). illus., 31 pp.
by
John Cargill Brough
Prepared by Michael Steer
The British Association was founded in 1831 and modelled on the German counterpart. Its founder was Rev William Vernon Harcourt who was disillusioned with the elitist and conservative attitude of the Royal Society. This booklet's author in 1864, became editor of an edition of Cooley's Cyclopaedia of Practical Receipts, and as a self-trained chemist was elected a Fellow of the Chemical Society. In 1867, he published the science journal Laboratory. While well received among scientists, it was abandoned as not profitable. In 1869, Brough published this 'humorous' brochure during the Exeter meeting of the British Association. The following year he was named Librarian and Superintendent of the London Institution in Finsbury Circus, where he became a popular lecturer on a number of scientific topics including a course of holiday lectures on the philosophy of magic. This rare and much sought-after book was produced digitally by Google from a copy in the Princeton University Library collection and can be downloaded from HathiTrust. Google has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. These books, on which copyright has expired, are available for free educational and research use, both as individual books and as full collections to aid researchers.
