Will of William Burkenam of Exeter

In the name of God amen the seventh daie of november in the year of our Lord God a thousand ffyve hundred threescore and three i William Buckenam of the Citie of Excester being whole and sounde of mynde and of perfecte remembrance thanks be unto god make my testament delivering herein my last will in mannor and fourme following? ? first i bequeathe my soule to our lord Jesus Christ my maker and redeemer and my bodie to beburied in the parish church of Sante Petrock next to the pulpit there
Item i will that my executors hereafter named shall distribute to everie househoulder in Sainte Petrocks parish iiijd in money to be delivered on my dyinge daie or the morrow after to so many of them as will [???]
Item i will also that they distribute on the daie of my deathe or in two monthes after to the lame blinde and bedlear people in the Citie of Excester shyrtes and smockes to the value of twentie nobles also i will that they distribute to everie poor and impotente person within the Citie of Excester iiijd in monie to be delivered on my dyinge daie? ?also they distribute to everie poore man in Winards alms house ijd in money and so to all poor alms [? ? ?] and bedlare people to everie? of them ijd
Item that they distribute to the prisoners within the Queens gaile there xijd in money everie daie during thirtie daies next after my death and to the prisoners in the Citie Gayle iijd in money everie daie during thirtie daies next after my decease also i give to the parson of the parish church of Sante Petrocke for tithes forgotten xxth? also i bequeathe to everie of my [? ? ] a gown of black clothe at 6d the yarde

Item i will that my executors deliver to Jerome Mayowe and Joan Mayowe his sister all such plate as i have of their father in [?????]
Item i bequeathe to the said Jerome Mayowe and Joane his sister to each of them one hundred markes to be delivered unto them on the daie of their marriage conditionallie they trouble not my executors for the matter of such goods as i had of their father and i will that if any of them happen to die before marriage said and solomised that then the hundred markes bequeathed to him or her dying be delivered to the other of them [? ? ? ? ? ?] in the daie of his or her marriage
Item i bequeathe to the saide Jerome Mayowe one of my silver goblets with the [??????] then i bequeathe to the said Joane another of my silver goblets [????] a [????]
Item i bequeathe to Willm Burgoyne eldest son of George Burgoyne my best silver bole with the [????] [????] gilte
Item i bequeathe to Robert Burgoyne youngest son of? the saide George Burgoyne an other of my silver boles
Item i bequeath to the other of my daughters children to whom no plate is before bequeathed all the residue of my plate of silver silver gilte or pewter gilte provided alwaies and my will is that they shall promys and suffer my wief to have the custodie and occupation thereof during her lief if she lyve so long unmarried
Item i bequeathe Elizabe Burgoyne fourtie pounds to be delivered unto her on the day of her marriage
Item i will and devise and bequeathe to the aforesaide Jone Mayowe all my lands and tennements lyinge in the parish of St Sidwells Excester one meadow now in the tenure of Richard [ Perkins] brewer whych i have devised to George Burgoynes eldest sonne to have and to houlde to her and to the heirs of her bodie lawfullie begotten
Item i will to Gertrude Chechester youngest childe of my daughter Elizabeth all my house and tennement lying in Southgate street beneathe the statue of the Saint within the Citie of Excester to have and to houlde to her and her heirs forever next after the decease of my wife
Item i will devise and bequeathe to Jone Burgoyne one of my stables and a garden lying at Pancleswell within the saide Citie of excester which one [? ? ? ? ?]? (Tucker?) there now houldethe to have and to houlde to her and her heirs forever also i will and devise to Margaret Burgoyne sister of the saide Jane the next stable and garden lying at Pancleswell aforesaide which John Aesoppe baker now houldethe to have and to holde to her and her heirs forever
Item i devise and bequeathe to Marie Burgoyne sister of the said Margaret an other stable lying at Pancleswell aforesaide and my house lying next to Saint Pancras church which one Sir John Williams now holdethe to have and to hold to her and her heirs forever
Item i give and bequeathe my terme of years which i have in permit of the house i now dwell in which i holde of John Sidnam esquire to the forfeider Robert Burgoyn [? ? ?] allwaies that he permit and suffer my wief to occupie and the same during her lief also? i will and bequeathe to the afforesaide Gertrude Chechester the other [????] of my house which i now dwell in which i boughte of John Wilcote to have and to houlde to her and her heirs forever after the decease of my wief
Item i will devise and bequeathe to Robert [???????] my house in Champertowne lying at the higher end of the town of Topsham in the countie of devon which i latelie bought of Thomas Powell of Topsham to have and to holde to him and his heirs forever under the condition following that is to where the said Robert Symte and his heirs shall maintain the two little houses for two poor men and their wiefs at his own proper costs and charges if they then [????] be not able to repaye the same payinge a reasonable rent for the same
Item i will and devise to the foresaide William Burgoyne eldest sonne of the said George Burgoyne my meadow lying [? ? ? ?]   [? ? ? ] gate of the said Citie of Excester which Richard Herkins brewer now holdethe to have and to holde to him and his heirs for ever upon condition that he and his heirs shall paye or cause to be paide one in everie quarter of the year to everie of the twelve poor persons of the alms house which was late the Chappel of St Anne iiijd in money
Item i will that my Popes vestments and chalice shall be [? ?] and bestowed by the discretion of my executors and overseers the residue of all my goodes and chattels before not devised nor bequeathed i give and bequeathe to Elizabeth my wife and Philip Chechester esquire my sonne in law whom i ordanine and make my hole executors of this my last will and testament to bestowe and use the same as to them shall come better for the health of my[? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?] and i ordaine and make John Wolcote and Robert Simmes overseers of this my last will and testament to be the same [???????] and performed accordingly and fore their paines herein to be performed and taken i beqeathe to everie of them xiij"iiij" in money and [? ? ? ? ? ] and yardes of blacke cloathe at x" the yarde to make everie of them a black gown also i give and bequeathe to Agness my [sister?] ten shillings also i will that myne executors bestowe one hundred markes in landes and that they [? ? ? ? ?] the same landes to these of the poor from the Citie of Excester for ever this being witnessed Willm Benne of [? ? ?] parson of Saint Petrock aforesaide John Wolcote? William Bucknam had two daughters: Elizabeth who married George Burgann (Burgoyne) of South Tawton at St Petrocks Exeter 7 june 1540 and 2nd to Phillip Chechester of Santon near Braunton 2 october 1559.
Dorothy Buckman married Phillipp Maye 20 july 1543 at St Petrocks Exeter.in his will (1551) Phillipp Maye (Mayhew/ Mayow) asks for William Buckenam my father in law to care for his children at reasonable cost.

William Buckenam was the 2nd sheriff (shire reeve) of the Citie of Excester in 1538,his daughter Elizabeth married George burgoyne who was the son of William Burgoyne who was the 1st sheriff of Exeter. william Buckenam was also mayor of Exeter in 1541.(from"Exeter memories" segment about civic roles ).
